Thanksgiving 2005

Thanksgiving 2005. Last year I didn’t spend thanksgiving with my
family, since I was visiting my fam in Malaysia for Hari Raya, so it
was nice to be back for the family tradition that I have known since my
childhood of observing Thanksgiving with my grandparents and extended
family. My family does not really observe the overt tradition of
Thanksgiving as the historical event of the colonizing settlers’
survival, but considers it more a ritual for an opportunity to get
together, share food, and enjoy each other’s company. As always, there
was turkey, mashed potatoes, and some kind of greens, along with all
the garneshings of stuffing, cranberry sauce, and apple pie: a real
down home American meal. I found out after the meal that this year was
special, because at the my Grandmother revealed how anxious she was
with the responsibility of preparing the turkey, and declared that she
was not going to do another turkey for Thanksgiving again. Well, we
will all be unfortunate next year, because Gram’s turkeys are
delicious. I’m glad I was lucky enough to have some the last Jean
Sterrett Thanksgiving turkey.
During the rest of my trip, I was lucky enough to spend a week in New
York and enjoy all the culinary delights that the city offers. From
real New York slices of pizza and bagels, to Jamaican jerk chicken,
Arab stews, and authentic Indian food, I know a lot of good spots in
the city for tender vittles, weather they be Carribean, Arab, Indian,
or Italian, and I made it a point to visit each one once, which meant
trodding through traffic on the BQE to get to Jackson heights, or
riding do down Nostrand Ave to get to Flatbush. Anyway, it was a nice,
relaxing trip in which I got a lot of eating done, as well as work.
