Ahmad Jamal Live
This doesn’t count as current news, but
I’ve been meaning to post this short blurb about the Ahmad Jamal show I
saw a few weeks ago…
Yoshi’s Jazz Cafe – January 4th, Ahmad Jamal with Idris Muhammad on
drums and ? on Bass.
First of all I did not know Idris Muhammad would be on drums tonight,
and dude is like a legend in his own right (www.idrismuhammad.com),
so you can imagine how geeked I was by this, and that I got free
tickets also.
The only thing I really know about Ahmad Jamal is that Pete Rock, Large
Professor, and Primo, all want to be his stepchild, and O dub did a
post about him and the songs that inspired many a beats, most notably
Nas and Pete Rock’s “Who’s World is This.”
This show being Ahamd Jamal’s first show of the night and his four day
stay at Yoshi’s, I thought it would take him some time to get in the
cut, but my man wasted no time to get loose. From what I remember, he
only did one track, Dolphin Dance, from his crate digger’s wet dream
album, Awakening.
Otherwise, his playing was balanced, pleasing, and relaxing.
