Ridin’ High
I was on the stands at my folks’ Raphael and Ronica’s wedding last
month, doing the background music thing before the wedding, and decided
to stretch it out with Faze-O’s “Riding High,” from the Ipod. I turned around to pluck something out of the crates for the next track, and I hear someone say – “you got this on LP or CD?”
And I tell him, “Neither, it’s just playing on the Ipod.” I
take this guy for an older uncle of Raphael who knows his joints from
the 70’s pretty well, and it turns out I have no idea just how well.
He proceeds to tell me, “Yeah, this is me.”
And I tell him, “Yeah, I love these 70’s joints too.”
He says, “No I’m saying, this IS ME.”
And I, still not quite getting it, say something like, “yeah, they don’t really make tracks like these anymore.”
He has to say it one more time: “No, THIS IS ME ON THIS SONG.”
I finally realize from his frustration with me, that the music playing from the speakers is music he played some 30 years ago.
So
I proceed to learn that he used to sit in on studio sessions with
groups like Faze-O, Slave, the Ohio Players, and a slew of other
stellar groups based in
proceed to chop it up for a while about the various groups, he tells me
some stories, I show some him of the Slave records in the crate, I tell
him about some groups who have sampled this track, he tells me about
some people still trying to claim royalties for these tracks, we share
a pound and he moves on. It was dope, and definitely a good start to the gig which eventually goes really well.
